Some of you may have read an article in this week's Leigh Journal regarding the future of Leigh Market.
http://www.leighjournal.co.uk/news/11881474.Struggling_traders_fear_for_future_of_market/
At a meeting between Council officers and market traders to discuss a new rent billing system, much was said but sadly some of it was at the least without foundation. I have to admit to not attending the meeting so I am relying on the accuracy of the newspaper report as a basis for my comments.
One trader is alleged to have predicted the closure of Leigh Market within 6 months. Personally, I think that such a prospect is as likely as hell freezing over. By all accounts Leigh Market is performing much better than Wigan Market and the prospect of a market closure would be politically treacherous.
However, I think it is true that the Council could and should do more to promote the market and it seems that the funds to do so are available.
To the good folk of Leigh and the surrounding districts I would ask you to support your local market. Ultimately, this is the only route to its long term prosperity.

About Us
We conceived shurtz early in 2012 to cater for customers who required quality printed garments (and other items) that could conceivably be printed using heat-applied media.
We offer a photo/image transfer and vinyl printing service for all occasions and virtually all garments. Customers can supply the items or we can provide what you require. Let us know how you want each item personalising and we will give you a fixed quotation.
Unusual items such as untreated gazebos, cloth mobile covers, pillow cases, smooth baby-grows, flags and banners are all items we routinely print. If it's made of cotton, polyester, or poly-cotton, chances are we can print it.
Typical products and services we supply include personalised tee shirts for hen and stag parties, safety and corporate wear for businesses, uniforms for sports and social clubs, naming and numbering of football kits, work-wear including tunics for beauty therapists and hairdressers, holiday-wear and general fashion-wear. In fact, we can source just about anything.
If you call on stall at Leigh Market, we can usually recreate your required design on screen there and then for you to check out prior to printing and, even during our busier periods we will send a draught design to you on the same day by email for you to approve.
You can contact shurtz by email: shurtz@hotmail.co.uk , by telephone: 07530 703582 or just come along for a chat at Unit P21, Leigh Market Hall, Leigh, WN7 4PD, Tuesday-Saturday, 9.30 am-4.00 pm. Facebook us at https://www.facebook.com/shurtzofleigh
